AUGS-SUFU joint publication: Joint Position Statement on Midurethral Slings for Stress Urinary Incontinence Female Pelvic Med Reconstr Surg 2021;27: 707–710
This position statement by the American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS) and the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU) aimed to support the use of the midurethral sling (MUS) for the surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Although the notice issued by the United States Food and Drug Administration considered MUS to be relatively safe, the British government announced that the use of mesh for the treatment of POP and urinary incontinence was to be paused. However, most experts who deal with female SUI are supportive of the use of the MUS and this joint publication highlights the justifications for their use.
Especially, the authors focuses on safety and efficacy of monofilament polypropylene material as a surgical implant, also in long-term period.
